![]() ![]() Chise and Elias do have a very intimate bond between them it’s not in a shoujo type way though, more like they’re soulmates. That’s not to say that there isn’t any romance in The Ancient Magus Bride. Screencap from “The Ancient Magus’ Bride–Anime Early Impressions” by Jonathon Tappan. ![]() But we learn that these stories have a more sinister motive, often including gory images and a very depressed Chise. The arcs in the series usually begin with fun and fae creatures, and since it’s set in Britain we often get references to British fantasy, such as A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Shakespeare. Elias often treats Chise very well throughout the series, but because of his wild origins and lack of empathy, he often leads her into darkness unwittingly. Chise is a human, but she is able to draw magic from her surroundings and can see creatures that other humans cannot, this allows her to be sold for a high price to her new owner (and proclaimed fiancé) Elias Ainsworth. The full series begins (this isn’t really a spoiler since it happens within the first few scenes) with Chise as a teenager selling herself to some sort of black market for magical beings. While the title may suggest that this is a magical tale of romance between a mage and a special girl, The Ancient Magus Bride is surprisingly dark. The animation isn’t the only thing going for this series. Screencap from The Ancient Magus Bride: Those Awaiting a Star So many scenes have such pretty, earthy-toned colors, and images sparkle in magical ways. The animation is one aspect that made me reconsider this anime’s placement in my top ten. It’s not necessary to watch in order to understand the full series, but I highly recommend it because it’s such a bittersweet story (I definitely teared up) Screencap from The Ancient Magus Bride: Those Awaiting a StarĪnd the animation is gorgeous. Those Awaiting a Star is a three-episode prequel to the full series and tells the story of Chise Hatori’s time as a child when she happens upon a library in the forest. So, my first review is over The Ancient Magus Bride: Those Awaiting a Star (2016) and The Ancient Magus Bride (2017). I’ll try to remain spoiler free and use warnings if I am about to spoil something, but will give general plot points throughout my reviews. I’d also appreciate any comments or suggestions on where you think each anime should be on the list, or recommendations for an anime you think deserves a place on the list. At the end of reviewing all ten, hopefully, I’ll be able to judge the anime more accurately. So, what I’ve decided to do is review each anime that was originally in my top ten list, but in no order. Then I began worrying that my entire list was in the wrong order. I originally had a list made up, with The Ancient Magus Bride at #10, but as I began re-watching the series I realized that it was much better than I remembered. However, this was harder than I expected. 14 to properly understand that Ruth could shape-shift.Hey everyone, for my student-directed project I wanted to compile a list of my top ten favorite anime. (Although Ruth's attachment to Chise happens in ch. Since everything above is explained in enough detail by the point in the manga where Ruth appears and becomes a familiar, it would appear sufficient that an OVA viewer at least read the manga up to ch. ![]() The above also holds for Angelica's appearance at the beginning. Either way, sufficient context is given in the beginning chapters of the manga, in the first volume. As far as I am concerned, this can simply be handwaved as part of the worldbuilding or plot construction. Personally, I do not think we actually need to know either. One reviewer complains that we are not introduced to Elias or given an explanation for why Chise is studying magic. (Unfortunately, I forgot the exact chapters, particularly since some of the information in question is spread out over several chapters.) Both of these aspects of Chise were discussed prior to the Ruth arc. The OVA also depicts Chise as being haunted by her ability to see magical creatures invisible to others as a child. Reference is made to Chise being a Slay Vega. In other words, the viewer must have finished reading ch. Understanding this requires the viewer to have finished reading the arc where Ruth is introduced and where he becomes Chise's familiar. Later, he transforms into a boy to eat breakfast with her and Elias. I did notice, however, certain details that would require knowledge of certain manga chapters:Įarly in the episode, Ruth speaks to Chise as a dog. 15 of the manga, and I didn't have any trouble understanding the first episode. I started watching Those Awaiting a Star despite my concerns. ![]()
